Xylem TRIO, Angela Brown, Andris Poga
An old LNSO saying has it that the end of the year spent in a whirl of rhythms means a bright and breezy spirit for the New Year. The experiences of an American in Paris, the bitter sweet mood of the blues, the sensuous touch of the bolero, dancing in New York’s Times Square and to top it all, the powerful and luscious voice of Angela Brown.
The LNSO end of the year gala programme will be under the leadership of the orchestra’s new artistic director and chief conductor Andris Poga. The concert will begin with George Gershwin’s witty symphonic sketch An American in Paris.
A lot of effort has been invested in preparing the concert by the Xylem Trio ensemble (Oskars petrauskis – saxophone, Raimonds petrauskis – piano and Rihards Zaļupe – percussion). These three have tackled Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and transformed the piano solo so that all three will have the chance to shine. If that wasn’t enough, they have taken Ravel’s Bolero to their sound laboratory and come up with all kinds of wonders, which they don’t talk about in order not to spoil the surprise. The talented triumvirate will also crown the gala programme with their own suite of popular Gershwin melodies and here we can expect an intriguing collaboration with singer Angela Brown. We first met this sincere and talented soprano several years ago in Riga as Tosca and Aïda. This time there will be no love drama or violence! Only George Gershwin’s immortal melodies that made this enormously talented son Russian Jewish immigrants one of the wealthiest composers in the world. Alongside Gershwin and Ravel, the programme also includes Leonard Bernstein’s symphonic dances from the musical On the Town, which takes us to New York during the Second World War. The music inspires dreams of love along with the young American sailors looking for romance.
